Kyiv's metro system needs generators and batteries to ensure continuous operation.
Former head of the management board of Ukrenergo, Volodymyr Kudrytsky, believes that to avoid power outages, the Kyiv metro needs backup power sources and starting systems. According to him, the metro's traction substations need to be equipped with diesel or gas power plants and energy storage systems to cover the starting currents of trains.
The Kyiv metro requires the installation of backup power sources and their activation to prevent outages, according to former head of Ukrenergo, Volodymyr Kudrytsky.
According to Kudrytskyy, to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the metro, the traction substations that power it need to be equipped with diesel or gas-powered power plants to cover the metro's energy consumption. Also, energy storage systems are needed to cover the starting currents of the trains.
He explained that even with a generator that has a power output greater than the consumption of the traction substation, it is impossible to start the system in the event of a power outage, as it is necessary to provide the starting current. This requires additional devices, such as a frequency converter or a battery.
Kudrytskyi noted that the project design and funding should have been completed by the end of 2025, in order for the system to be operational by this winter. He did not specify the required power equipment capacity and cost for the metro system.
