Kyiv veterinarians explain how to care for animals during the cold season and in shelters.

Small, short-haired, older, and weakened animals may be particularly sensitive to cold. Owners are advised to provide a warm place to rest and to prepare in advance for providing shelter.

At the Kyiv City Hospital of Veterinary Medicine, they reminded residents about caring for their pets as the weather gets colder. Experts noted that low temperatures can particularly affect small, short-haired, older, or weakened pets. If necessary, they should be provided with warm clothing for walks.

At home, veterinarians recommend providing a dry and soft place for rest. It should be protected from drafts and a cold floor; a blanket or duvet can provide additional warmth.

Animals need constant access to fresh water. It is recommended to choose food based on their age, activity level, and individual needs.

During air raid alerts, owners can stay in shelters with their pets. It is recommended to prepare items for this in advance. A blanket or mat can help protect against a cold floor, and a blanket or duvet should also be taken.

In addition to the essentials, it is recommended to include drinking water, food, and treats. A familiar toy can help reduce stress. For keeping the animal, a leash, collar, and carrier will be needed.

Experts also advise having cleaning supplies, a veterinary passport, and any necessary medications, if the pet requires them. Residents are asked not to leave animals unattended in cold weather, in the yard, or in a car.
