Kyiv has completed approximately 80% of its plan to prepare critical infrastructure for winter in 2026/2027 years. The capital city has put into operation approximately 85 MW of new generating capacity and completed the equipping of critical infrastructure with backup power. According to the Center for Energy Research, Kyiv is one of the best-prepared cities in Ukraine for potential attacks.
Kyiv has completed approximately 80% of the plan to prepare critical infrastructure for winter, according to Alexander Харченко, director of the Center for Energy Research (ЦДЕ). The plan covers the period 2026 to 2027 years.
During the off-season, the capital city put into operation approximately 85 MW of new generating capacity and completed the equipping of critical infrastructure with backup power. This will ensure the basic functioning of urban networks during the autumn-winter period.
According to an expert, Kyiv is implementing a concept for preparing for the heating season under the conditional name "dark, but warm." It is expected that by the end of the year, the city will have approximately 200 MW of combined heat and power generation, which will fully meet the needs of the water supply and heating systems.
According to ЦДЕ, approximately 5 thousand homes with backup heating in case of freezing temperatures (from -5°C to -10°C) will maintain temperatures of +10…+14°C in their apartments. At the same time, approximately 3 thousand homes still lack a backup heat source. Kyiv is one of the best-prepared cities in Ukraine for potential attacks, while in many cities in western Ukraine, the level of protection for critical infrastructure is lower.
