Kyiv is building 13 thermal power plants with a capacity of 1600 MW, and Zelensky is dissatisfied with the pace of progress.
Kyiv is constructing approximately 13 facilities for backup thermal power with a total capacity of about 1600 MW and 40 MW of backup power for the water supply system. The plan is to complete these facilities by the end of the year. The state has unblocked payments that were previously suspended due to the purchase of equipment. At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is dissatisfied with the progress of the preparations for the capital and has stated that he is personally responsible for the delays.
In Kyiv, a backup heating system is being built to ensure the city has heat in the event of damage to the main facilities. This was announced by Petro Pantelyev, the acting first deputy head of the Kyiv City Administration. In total, the capital is constructing approximately 13 new facilities with a total capacity of about 1600 MW, as well as plans to add 40 MW of backup power for the water supply facilities. All projects are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Part of the work was previously blocked due to the freezing of state payments: this led to the suspension of the purchase and transportation of foreign equipment. Now, the state has unblocked these funds.
In parallel, the city has already prepared approximately 80 modular and mobile boilers and installed about 700 generators at heating and water supply facilities. These power the boiler houses, pumping stations, and 155 public water fountains. Mr. Panteleev emphasized that a full reserve for large facilities will only be provided by the new combined heat and power (CHP) plants and diesel generators.
Heating centers have already been established in each district of the capital. The heads of the Obolon, Podil, and Sviatoshyn districts have been instructed to further deploy "Unbreakable Points."
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is dissatisfied with the pace of preparations for the capital. According to him, the delay in work will be the responsibility of individuals, and the city authorities of Kyiv are practically not taking the necessary steps to ensure the resilience of the city.
