Kyiv City Council explained how schools in Kyiv will function during power and water outages.
The Department of Education and Science of the Kyiv City Council has explained how Kyiv schools will operate during prolonged power outages and water supply disruptions. If generators and inverters are available, classes will be held in person; if there is insufficient lighting, classes will be conducted in an online format; if it is not possible to ensure the safety of children, the school will switch to remote learning.
The Department of Education and Science of the Kyiv City Council has explained how Kyiv schools will operate during prolonged power outages, disruptions in water supply, and other challenges caused by the war. Each school will determine its learning format based on the security situation, technical capabilities, and the conditions for students and staff.
If the school has the technical capabilities, it will use alternative sources of power and lighting – generators, inverters, and charging stations. If there is a lack of lighting for writing tasks, teachers will be able to conduct lessons in an oral format until the necessary conditions are restored. In the event that it is not possible to ensure the safety of the children, they will be moved to remote learning; in-person learning is only possible if sanitary requirements are met, and if it is not possible to provide water, classes in the classroom will be suspended, and the educational process will be organized remotely.
Under favorable security conditions, lessons will be held in school premises. During air raid alerts, students, together with teachers, will move to designated shelters. In the capital, the "educational migration" mechanism will continue to be used – lessons in free spaces of other educational institutions, such as schools and kindergartens, if they meet the necessary conditions.
Online classes will be available to both children who remain in Kyiv and those who have temporarily left the capital. If necessary, students will learn from specially equipped workstations in school shelters. If a teacher is unable to safely reach the school, they will conduct online lessons from a safe location, with the approval of the administration.
In the event of building damage, prolonged power outages, water supply disruptions, or other emergencies, the entire facility may temporarily switch to a remote learning format. Parents will be informed of any changes by the school administration through established communication channels. If an air raid alert is announced during a remote lesson, the lesson will be suspended so that the teacher and students can move to a safe location. The online lesson will then be resumed or a new lesson will be started according to the schedule.
At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher will record the attendance of students: if a child does not join the lesson, the parents will receive a corresponding notification.
